Mastication Drum

Mastication Drum – design (11.07.2012) – a device that spins slowly and grinds vegetation into fibre and mulch for use by the machine. I designed this so that a broader range of materials could be used. Each type of plant material needs processing to break the cell wall structure – the technique borrow from birds (and dinosaurs) who are know to eat pebbles to assist in digesting vegetation. Since they have no teeth they need a plan b.

from when I was imagining the entire process of creating the substrate to be a part of the machine, and when the substrate was comprised of cut stems and pine needles.
